Why is bonding so good?

Bonding fillings and crowns means that we can make long lasting large restorations without having to take as much tooth away.

Bonding to the tooth means that the restoration is chemically and physically attached to the tooth. Not only does the tooth support the restoration, but the restoration supports the tooth. Previously, the tooth was not strengthened unless it was crowned.

The main component of the bonding agent is a resin which attaches to the prepared collagen within the dentine forming a very strong attachment. The resin then chemically bonds to the porcelain restoration using a silane coupling agent.
