Stained teeth

Couple with fresh smile
Having stained teeth is a common problem and can be treated in a variety of different methods depending on the type of staining and the result wanted.

Stains may be located on one, several, or all of the teeth and be the result of food and drink, such as tea, or built into the tooth from birth. Teeth may also discolour over time.

Superficial surface stains – these are stains that can be removed by brushing with toothpaste after professional advice, or a professional scale and polish with one of our hygienists. We may need to use the airflow system that removes stains from inaccessible fissures using a gentle stream of bicarbonate particles in a fast airflow.

Deep embedded stains – these are stains that have worked their way into the structure of the teeth over time and often cannot be removed by a hygiene appointment. For deep stains, or just to lighten the shade of your smile, professional teeth-whitening containing peroxide can be used to penetrate the tooth surface and bleach the teeth.

Developmental white stains removed using microabrasion

Inherited or developmental stains - some stains occur during tooth development. Developmental white spots may be removed using modern microabrasion techniques if they are shallow, or masked using a small aesthetic white filling - usually without the need for an injection. In this example we also added composite to the tips of the teeth to make them look less worn.

More severe stains may benefit from tooth whitening treatments or in severe cases dental veneers.
